Another school essay which I think should fit inside this blog though I think it is not so specific.
One of my friends who studied in a school in Singapore once had to do an online assignment. The procedure required him to print the question paper. Nothing seemed troublesome until he had to print his answer sheet. The school’s computer lab was already closed, so he had to use his own laptop, which he never had. The deadline forced him to madly seek for a computer.
The next day, which was the deadline, he was doomed to meet no computers at all. He hopelessly attempted to explain to his teacher on why he could not submit the assignment on time.
‘You rely too much on computers’; the teacher’s explanation broke his heart. ‘You can just write it on a piece of paper and hand it up to me. That would be fine.’
My friend is not alone when it comes to completing a task in this modern era. Due to the ubiquitous computers, we tend to trust them to process what we want to do. The seductive power of computers relies on its two main attributes. Firstly, they can perform numerous tasks at the same time, or multitasking. This essence totally excites our world that is spinning so fast that time has never been enough. The second is the ability to unite people all around the world. With the aid of Internet, a thousand of miles can be covered up by a single click. Everyone is more connected than ever with websites, emails and instant messengers.
Furthermore, the power of computer is synthesized with the power of economy. Such power is indispensable to connect a company to the world and bring the world to the company. Every worldwide corporation is said to have an average of two hundred thousands of computers. Moreover, it is almost impossible to calculate bank deposit using a conventional calculator as well as present your ideas without using slides. Though the machines cost extremely high, they are the core of modern economy and marketing.
Next on my list, the power of computer can transform an individual to be a part of the world, from a sole person limited by time and distance to an avid contributor to the community. Once one has dialed the Internet, innumerable resources and possibilities are waiting for him. A student may be too reluctant to scrutinize every bookshelf in the National Library to find the book he wants. Even so, he would not reject, most likely, to just open Google.com and type the keywords. Astonishingly, the computers have provided chances for every of us to save information as well. There is no restriction for students who feel they are capable to edit online-encyclopedias. Even they can store the tedious tales of their trivial days with blogs.
An old proverb says that a man falls in love with his eyes and a woman with her ears. Perhaps, in terms of current days, they both fall in love with their computers. It is obvious that more people prefer searching for friends in the web to socializing face-to-face. There is no need to walk and talk when we can just tap and click. Social networking has been so influential for its freedom of expression and loose limitations. To have no identity in the virtual world can mean missing big chances to establish relationships which are needed to survive in the global world.
One may argue that the reliance of computer depends on where and who you are. If you are a farmer in a third world country, you would pay no attention to Facebook and Youtube. However, if you are starving, you can always ask for your friend from the city to report your anguish. Your suffering may invite UN’s charity money to compound the national deposit and your village map on the Google Earth.
To summarize, computers are inevitably necessary in the world’s economy. Since almost everything needs money to work, computers become automatically the most efficient tool to indulge with. Communication, entertainment and business can be mixed and obtained with them. As this step means information has to be stored and shared together, computers grow its other trunk to become a gigantic library. The stoic machines extend their hands to education afterwards.
Yes, people nowadays desperately need the powerful computers. The reason is not only because they intend to catch up with trends, but also it is a prerequisite to receive their salary, and grades for some students.
Back to my friend, he was lucky to have his teacher ignored the assignment. The teacher wasted one full period trying to recharge his laptop’s battery.
Computers are extensions of our body to grip the soil of modern rapid society. But it is important to remember our hands can perform more than just typing and clicking.
